**Fei-Fei Li – The AI Trailblazer**

*The Worlds I See, Fei-Fei Li’s New Book*

The pandemic has driven people toward introspection. For Fei-Fei Li, a head figure in the world of artificial intelligence, introspection led to reevaluating her direction. The suggestion to write a book from a literary agent resonated with her because of her monumental work in AI, particularly with ImageNet, a project she spearheaded.

**An Empowering Narrative**

As a co-founder of Stanford’s Institute of Human-Centered AI (HAI), Fei-Fei spent the pandemic year writing a book. It was initially a technical book, but a conversation with her colleague Jon Etchemendy led to a reassessment. He urged her to infuse the book with her personal journey to inspire young immigrants, women, and people of diverse backgrounds that they, too, can succeed in AI.

**The Journey of ImageNet**

Fei-Fei’s book, *The Worlds I See*, is structured like a double helix, intertwining her personal quest with the trajectory of AI. The book delves into her experience as an immigrant who overcame obstacles to become a key figure in AI. It narrates the monumental creation and implementation of ImageNet, highlighting the fearlessness and determination of her team, which was supported by her parents’ sacrifices.

**Seeing the World Through AI’s Eyes**

In her book, Fei-Fei reflects on the profound outcomes of ImageNet, which required her to view the world through the eyes of an artificial neural network algorithm. Ultimately, the efforts led to groundbreaking contest in 2012, which kicked off the deep learning boom that still impacts the field of AI today.

**Biases and Solutions**

Fei-Fei’s narrates her “twinge of culpability” when Google mislabeled Black people as gorillas, an incident that revealed biases in AI image recognition. These experiences led her to launch AI4All to bring women and people of color into the field, recognizing the need to fix the imperfections of AI.

**Looking Toward the Future**

Fei-Fei acknowledges that bias in machine learning remains a serious problem. She cautiously expressed optimism about finding both technical and governance solutions to mitigate these biases. When asked about the dire predictions that AI might lead to human extinction, she emphasized the need for hope, expressing a balanced perspective on the future of AI.

In her new book, the AI trailblazer, Fei-Fei Li, illustrates her remarkable journey and contributions to the field of technology, reflecting on the past and envisioning a more inclusive and unbiased future for artificial intelligence.
