**Ukrainian Forces Make Gains in the South**

**Ukrainian Counteroffensive**
Following the confirmation that Ukrainian forces had crossed the Dnieper river into Russian-occupied territory in recent weeks, hopes have risen that this could be a small but key breakthrough in the six-month counteroffensive against Russia.

**The Battle for Kherson**
The Dnieper has effectively operated as a front line in the southern Ukrainian region of Kherson, separating Ukrainian troops on the west bank from Russian forces on the east, or left, bank. Last year, Russian forces had retreated to the east bank following an earlier counteroffensive by Ukraine that left the Kherson region occupied.

**Ukrainian Forces Advance**
Earlier this month, the official confirmation came that Ukrainian forces, including marine infantry and special operations forces, had managed to cross the wide Dnieper river in more substantial numbers than in previous sorties and established several footholds on the east bank. Military analysts describe this development as a small but significant breakthrough that could allow Ukraine to build on these positions and advance south toward Crimea, potentially breaking Russia’s land bridge.

**A Strategic Location**
According to Oleksandr Musiyenko, a Ukrainian military expert, and head of the Centre for Military and Legal Studies in Kyiv, the left bank of the Dnieper river in Kherson is strategically important due to its proximity to Crimea. Ukrainian forces on the left bank are just 70 kilometers from occupied Crimea, making this offensive operation crucial in disrupting Russian logistics and forcing Russian forces to deal with problems on multiple fronts.

**Intense Fighting and Defense**
Since the river crossing, intense fighting has ensued around several villages on the east bank, with Krynky being the epicenter of the conflict as Ukraine pushes Russian forces back from the river. The British Ministry of Defense reported intense, dismounted combat and artillery exchanges in complex, wooded terrain around Krynky.

**The Road Ahead**
While Russia was put on the back foot by Ukraine’s bold river crossing, the road ahead remains challenging. Sean Bell, a military analyst, stated that while Russia has established some defensive positions near the Dnieper, Ukraine must continue to develop a strong beachhead on the eastern bank to threaten the western flank of Russian forces and potentially force a Russian withdrawal from Crimea.

**Uncertain Situation**
Conflicting reports from both Ukraine and Russia make it difficult to fully understand the situation on the battlefield. However, the hope remains that Ukraine’s advance in the south could mark a significant breakthrough in the ongoing conflict.
